We took Charlie to the beach today. We live 20 minutes walk from the beautiful coastline of Sandy Haven in South Shields. He's already been, but that was last summer aged 12 months. So today, it was like he was experiencing it for the first time.
As we pushed his pram down onto the sand, his little face lit up as he took in all the view, sounds and smells.
The blue and white crashing & splashing of the waves, the calls of the seagulls, the smells of the salt & the seaweed. The shapes and sizes of the pebbles and rocks.
Half a mile of golden coloured sand, and water as far as he could see.
"Out!" he instructed.
And out he came. His expression was one beyond curiosity. He was in his own little world, a memorised wonder. So much space. He was free.
He took off down a small sandy hill, and then turned around and admired the footprint trail he'd left behind him. And then he turned back, and, with the wind blowing his blonde curls behind him, grinned at the sea & made his way towards it, arms held out either side of him to keep his balance.
