Review: New Gluten-free baby and toddler snacks from Kiddylicious

Now Charlie is incredibly active, he needs constant refueling between meals. That used to be easy; orange segments, blueberries, pieces of banana and some crackers and cheerios, all of which he munched down messily, with pleasure.

Then he hit twenty months, and suddenly he was looking at his piece of banana like something I'd fished out of a drain, and subsequently throwing it on the floor with disgust, looking at me like "How could you?!" To my utter bewildered frustration, he did the same with strawberry, orange, blueberry and mango - all of which he'd previously loved. It was only when he accepted toast, cheerios and cornflakes that I realised I had a new texture-fussy toddler on my hands. I tried baking fruit and putting it in a crumble...  he saw straight through it, screwing his face up and throwing his spoons on the floor.

He's had fruity crispy snacks before, but they were more like crackers, and they still seemed to have a sticky, chewy kind of texture to them. They'd always be left in his changing bag to go soft. A few days ago we were kindly sent some of the new crunchy snacks from Kiddylicious to sample and review, and I was really interested to see if Charlie would take to them.

Cheese flying saucers, Banana fruity puffs, Blueberry fruity puffs & Tomato flying saucers.

They are gluten free and all suitable from age seven months, which is brilliant because, being big & chunky, they're really easy for babies and young toddlers to hold (rather than slippery fruit) and direct into their own mouths. Older toddlers might also appreciate the Flying Saucer shape.

When I look for packaged snacks for Charlie, the things I usually look for are

1. Suitable for vegetarians
2. Sugar content/artificial flavoring
3. Nutritional value

They are suitable Vegetarians, as well as Coeliacs and Lactose intolerance.

They are not suitable for children with a nut allergy (or a potential one) due to how they are manufactured - around lots of nuts I expect!

There is 0.1g of salt, and 0.3g of sugar per bag.

The Fruity Puffs are made with Corn flour, the Flying Saucers with Rice flour. The other ingredients include Sunflower oil and Vitamin B1. They are flavoured with natural fruit or savory powders depending on flavour, and natural flavorings.

So, on to the fun part, the taste test!

First Charlie tried the Blueberry Fruity Puffs, these were the ones I'd have chosen in a shop because I'm blueberry crazy.

We took them on our spring walk with us.

I loved the purpley colour! Even though it was pretty obvious they would be from the "Blueberry powdered crisps" bit! I know Charlie is a bit too young to appreciate that, but he did say "Purple crispies!" before he started cramming them into his mouth. Every time one was in his mouth, his hand delved into the packet to grab another. He ate nearly all of them and clearly enjoyed them. I also nicked a couple and the blueberry flavour was lovely and they were so light and melty, ideal for seven month olds new to solid food.

Next he tried the Tomato Flying Saucers:

These were my favourites. They were really tasty and I loved the shape of them. Charlie seemed interested too because he loved pushing them around his tray, counting them, and trying to pile them up! Then he ate them all. They were smoother and larger, but still easy to pick up. They had the same, light fluffy, melty texture, with a light tomato taste. I really liked these ones.

Next we tried the Banana Puffs

I'm guessing these were Charlie's favourites as he ate every single one in about five minutes! I don't like banana flavourings but Charlie clearly does, as he shouted "Nana crispies!" and didn't stop eating them until they were finished.

We haven't had the Cheese Flying Saucers but Charlie loves quavers and anything cheesy so I'm guessing these will be a hit! I love how I now have a healthy snack that I can take out with us without getting a squeal over something squishy.

I'm guessing Charlie would definitely recommend them to other toddlers and babies too!

Kiddylicious do a fantastic range of healthy baby and toddler snacks. Before he was fussy Charlie used to love the fruit wiggles and the pineapple crisps.

You can find out more information about toddler snacking and their range of foods here: http://www.kiddylicious.co.uk/

I was sent these for the purpose of this review, these are all my own words.

A couple of Charlie's favourite books

A couple of lovely little children's books for toddlers.
"Wow said the owl" by Tim Hopgood.

I'm a huge lover of bright, bold colours and woodland animals so this book caught my attention immediately.

The main reason we bought it (from Waterstones) was because Charlie loves Owls and we wanted to get him an Owl book. Flicking through this in the shop though, I couldn't believe how gorgeous the illustrations were, and just how much colour is packed into this little book.

Each page is flooded with different colours. The illustrations remind me a bit of Eric Carle, which can only be a good thing!

In a beautifully simplistic, colourful way, we learn about:
  • Weather
  • Night and day: The sun and the moon.
  • That owls sleep at night
  • That the sun lights up the sky during the day
  • Flowers
  • Butterflies
  • How rainbows are made
  • Colours and natural colours in nature.
This book is also hard back, an obvious bonus when you have a little rough & tumble monkey! I have no fear of letting him toddle around with this book by himself. It's also small in size so is brilliant for packing into his changing bag.

Love the little colour activity at the end too

Little Bear's ABC and 123.

This was a present from Charlie's Grandma & Grandad for Christmas. For a lot of us parents, it'll be a nostalgic trip down memory lane with Little Bear and Old bear who live in an attic. I absolutely loved them to bits when I was little, so of course I want to introduce them to Charlie so he can enjoy them too.

The main reason I love this book is the beautiful illustrations, also by the talented Jane Hissey, they're in a league of their own.  Charlie is too little for the Old Bear stories, so this book is perfect for introducing him to the characters, as well as helping him learn his letters and numbers.

What I also like about this particular letter & numbers book is that it includes bother upper case and lower case letters, and the numbers both in letter form and numerical form.

It also includes the sounds letters can make when put together "Sh, Th, Ch".

In this book we learn:

  • The alphabet; from A to Z. There is one simple sentence involving an Old bear character, including words beginning with the relevant letter, under a beautifully illustrated picture. (E.g.  R is for run, Rabbit is running in a race).

  • To count from 1 to 10. There are two pages per one number. One page has a word with the number in numerical form, and the other page has a sentence with the number spelled out (E.g "6 candles" - and then "Little Bear and Ruff Ruff have six bouncy balls)
with beautifully illustrated pictures, where you can count each item.

  • The lovely characters of Old Bear.

  • Lots of talking opportunities. E.g "What can we see" on each picture (there are lots!).

  • The sounds that letters can make when put together (E.g Sh is for Shadows. Little Bear is showing Rabbit his shadow picture on the wall).

Again there's fun little activities at the end.

Inhale/Exhale bath bomb from Lush (Easter 2014 range)

This bath bomb smells VERY strong. It reminds me of loose leaf lapsang tea, where the tea leaves are dried over pinewood fires, making for an uber-smokey taste. A seriously intense blast of woody thick smoke in a mug. That is this, in a bath bomb.

Smoke smoke smoke.

The exhale is meant to be fruity, but the inhale just steals the stage. It's so overbearing.

Definitely a marmite bath bomb. You will love or you will loathe.

It kind of looks... a bit, like a blue squid exploded in the bath and it's guts came fizzing out...
To be completely honest (as one should be when reviewing on ones blog) I wish I'd not spent as much on these new Lush products, because I've been really disappointed.

I hated Golden Egg & Wonder Woohoo. Golden egg left me feeling dry and itchy and the smell was purely It's Raining Men - without any creamy mango that I could smell in solid form. And I couldn't smell Wonder Woohoo at all. Both left my bath water coloured with yellows and greys. Not very appealing to somebody who loves bold colours.

I was unimpressed with Brightside bubble bar - although pairing it with Think Pink bath bomb made for a gorgeous orangey/creamy extremely moisturising bath! Lovely sun-setty colours too. I think I'd get another of both just to do this again!

Now this. Inhale/Exhale bath bomb. There really isn't much I can say about it. Which is never a positive thing. It smelled interesting in solid form, I love the non-girly scents and this was very unusual but seriously, it just smelled like something burnt out- and I don't know if there's a problem with my nose or what but in the bath I could hardly smell anything once it'd fizzed.

The colours were like that of Twilight bath bomb, and you're left with a dirtyish purply colour and a sort of smoky musky scent. It's really subtle, which it probably has to be. But I couldn't smell the fruit. And I don't want to bathe in a bath of burnt coals. I like strong scents - Lord of Misrule, Karma, Big Blue & Twilight are out of this world in quality & scent and nothing I've tried from the Easter & Mothers day range compares to that sort of quality.

My favourites from the new 2014 ranges are by far are the Secret Garden bath bomb, and the Bunch of Carrots bubble bar. I know there are other "Egg" bath bombs but I'm not paying 7 quid for a bath bomb. No way. Not even if I could afford it.

So... that's it from my stash of the new Lush products - and my very honest reviews!

I've been told that if I'm a good mammy, I might get a bubble wand for Mothers Day and a piece of the carrot soap (which smells INCREDIBLE in the shop!), so I'll review them as and when.

Thank You for reading. You're all gorgeous.

Baby bot - Lush's bath bomb for babies.

With a mammy crazy for Lush, Charlie had Ickle Baby Bot as soon as he was over 1. The recommended age is from six months, but I'm not sure if I'd risk it on a smaller baby. But that's just me and my lovely obsession with using everything with the word 'mild' and 'for sensitive skin' on it when it comes to babies. I loved the Burts Bee's shower gel though when he was younger.

Burts Bee's stuff would be great for mothers day actually.. hmm...

Anyway, this is gorgeous. The smell is divine. Trust me, if it was crap, I'd tell you. I never liked the smell of lavender (conventionally, I thought it was an old lady smell) but since I've sniffed Twilight & Baby Bot my opinion has totally changed and I adore lavender. It reminds me of fantasy woodlands, the outdoors, safety and comfort.

This smells like lavender sherbert, if you can try and imagine that! Subtle and soft, there's plenty of fragrance there, but that delicate fragrance, like Fairy Fabric powder and Baby Comfort softener do when combined, it has that 'soft baby smell' that just hooks you. Well, it does me. I remember the summer Charlie was born, standing outside at the washing line & sniffing all of his little baby grows one by one - what an addictive smell!

It fizzes a gorgeous milky blue colour in the water and releases it's fragrance. I only used half here and the smell filled the bathroom. The water changed to a very pale blue.
Lovely fresh colour for bathing in. I think anyway.

As you can see - Charlie wasn't bothered by it - nor was he relaxed! But I wouldn't expect 10 baby bots & his own lullaby orchestra to relax him.

Charlie has a few dry patches of skin, mainly on the tops of his legs and on his face, and they were noticeably smoother after using Baby Bot. His skin was glowing the next day.

For this bath I only used half of it, but for the next one I'll use the whole thing so Charlie can be properly moisturised. He smelled soooo good afterwards too! :)

Ickle Baby Bot from Lush - absolute bargain at 1.95! I think I'll get myself a couple next time I'm in there for a lovely night time relaxing bath!

Pamper Sunday: Lush Carrot bubble bar (Easter 2014) ; Angels on Bare Skin clenser & Ayesha face mask.

I have oily skin, it gets spotty, it gets greasy, it gets patchy... I did not get lucky with my face skin, it's incredibly hard to control. THIS stuff does everything I want for my face! It brightens, it tones, it absorbs the grease and it soothes away the blotchyness! My skin always feels so refreshed and smooth afterwards. I've tried other cleansers from lush including Ocean Salt (Which I love for the salty refresher zing in the summer) and Let The Good Times Roll.... which does nothing whatsoever for my skin and the smell, which was delicious at first, got boring and too sickly after using it a few times! This is the best cleanser for you, if you have face skin like me!

Angels on Bare Skin £6.35/100g
10/10 for me.

Yes I cleanse my lips! They are skin too!
This smells soooo refreshing and green and healthy! I really love it.
I never buy my face masks because I buy so many other lush products I use the "Bring back 5 pots for a free face mask" offer and get them that way. I've currently switched from Cosmetic Warrior to Aeysha and this smells far better, and the consistency is like a scrub so your face feels extra clean afterwards! It's supposed to tone it and smooth out the lines and wrinkles temporarily so it's great to use before a night out or something :)
Really nice 7/10

Ayesha face mask  £5.95

BUNCH OF CARROTS BUBBLE BAR

These carrots really, really REALLY remind me of Cleo's catnip toy!
They smell SO fresh and soapy! I love refreshing smells!
They're supposed to smell fruity and blackcurrenty but they don't really to me... mainly soapy - but nice, luxury soapy!

I held one carrot under the tap - orange water!
Put your thumb over the running tap to create more pressure bubbles!
Tried to swirl it around the bath like it says on the website - but my swirling stalk came off!
My cutlery tray turned bottle holder makes a good carrot stand!
Lovely fresh smelling bubbles!
Made a great relaxing bath.

Bunch of carrots bubble bar £5.95

Right, now I'll be off supporting Man City playing our rivals Sunderland in the League cup...

Review: Why Charlie has loved his Toby Tiger rainbow blanket for 20 months!

Charlie's journey from 7 weeks -20 months with his beloved
"banky"

Before Charlie was born, I chose to buy this particular baby blanket because I love vibrant, bold colours. I knew it'd be soft, but I had absolutely no idea just how incredibly soft. All his relatives commented on the softness and the colours. It's honestly the softest material I've ever felt, which is why Charlie loved it from very young.

It's become his security item. It goes everywhere with him (if it's not there he'll ask "Where banky? Where is it?")

It's also his comforter. When he's banged his head or upset for any reason it'll calm him right down. He sits and rubs it against his face and you can tell immediately how soothed he is.

Now he's 20 months he's started saying the colours he can see on it. It's a beautiful blanket from the amazing Children's clothing company Toby Tiger.
